Theme: Wisdom; Role: Table Topics

The theme was “wisdom”, but my personal theme(s) were “creativity” and “opportunity”. The role of Table Topics allows for thinking well outside of the box. Therefore, what better way to reflect one’s innate internal wisdom than by using tarot cards. Spreading the deck and and allowing participants to select a card and describe it was a surprise every time – most of our members are not familiar with the Tarot, and as such, there was a great deal of creative thinking, marinating, and laughing. Luckily, our word of the day was “open-minded”. The most successful folks in the business world are those who can indeed think outside of the box and see beyond it; Toastmasters provides a safe and constructively critical atmosphere to learn/experience this!

I suppose it was also my inner wisdom that allowed me to deliver a last-minute touching story to fill in for one of our members that was ill:

Objective:

  • To understand the techniques available to arouse emotion
  • To become skilled in arousing emotions while telling a story

Assignment

Prepare, rehearse and present a story designed to arouse emotion in your listeners. Be sure to include all of the elements of a story – plot, setting, characters, conflict, action – keeping it moving and building to a climax. Do not use a script or notes when telling the tale. Maintain direct eye contact with your audience. Use natural gestures/body movement.

The setting for your storytelling should be informal and the atmosphere relaxed and intimate. Ask your listeners to sit in a semicircle facing you. Don’t stand behind a lectern or other obstacle. You don’t want any barriers between your listeners and you.

A day of tea-drinking and architecture gazing with some new friends in Cambridge brought me to the officer training at the Stone Road Toastmasters meeting to participate in the Officer Training. A recent development occurred as of late when I was asked to step in as the Treasurer for the forthcoming year. Although PR is certainly more my forté, I am detail oriented and have experience with accounting, so I expect this will be comfortable – worse case scenario: tolerable. Just another way of getting the most out of my Toastmasters education/training; saying “YES” one step (or giant leap) at a time towards my professional goals!

Toastmasters Leaning Institute

Toastmasters Leaning Institute + Club Officer Training

What a fantastic day filled with networking, learning, and socialization! The key note speaker was Clint Cora, speaker, author, and karate world champion. There were several points that immediately stood out to me:

  • Instead of just making wishes, I will make totally committed ___________________.
  • I should always try to expand my _____________________ each week by at last _____ %.
  • I should hang out with others who are highly _____________________.

My answers? Decisions, comfort/10, motivated/ambitious/adventurous… of course, there are a myriad of positive and encouraging words that I could insert above.

I attended 3 workshops during the day: VP Public Relations[1], The Road to DTM (Distinguished Toastmaster)[2], and Judging.

On Being a Toastmaster

The Road to DTM:

  1. Speaking
  2. Teaching
  3. Encouraging
  4. Planning
  5. Serving

On Being a Judge

Requirements for judging in official Toastmasters contests:

  1. Accurate
  2. Fair
  3. Trustworthy
  4. Knowledgeable
  5. Good Listener

[1] – I plan to run for this role at the next election
[2] – My goals are clear and defined: to complete my CL (Competent Leader) and ACB (Advanced Communicator Bronze) in the next 6 months, although I suspect I will need to a) Join another club b) Organize some speech-a-thons to have the opportunity for the requisite speaking engagements.

Web Site Progress

This week:

  1. I enjoyed my first Toastmaster role
  2. I started the club web site

Over the next couple of months, I will be creating the new web site for High Noon Toastmasters, Cambridge. Originally, our group went with a free site to cut costs, but I proposed a voluntary custom designed/programmed site that would:

  1. Serve as a recruitment tool to be a point of reference/SEO
  2. Contain functionality written specifically for the needs of our club
  3. Bring the personality of our group into an online offering

Being the programmer/designer of the application allows for unlimited freedom and creativity. Ideas that I have, which will be presented to the group next Monday:

  • High Noon: Old West style theme
  • CMS backend with full content management abilities (Testimonials, Links, Resources, Articles)
  • Area for weekly minutes to be posted
  • Speech Evaluation, General Evaluation, Timers and Ah Counter forms to be printed
  • Executive officer profiles / photos / e-mail addresses
  • Each member has the option for an online profile
  • Assign and confirm roles with e-mail notification
  • Generate agendas online for printing
  • Create and send newsletter/e-mail blasts to the group
  • A blog
