Objective:

Develop an entertaining dramatic talk about an experience or incident

Include vivid imagery, characters, and dialog

Deliver the talk in an entertaining manner

Assignment

For this project, prepare, rehearse and deliver a five to seven minute dramatic speech, including narration, as you set the scene and describe what is taking place, and dialogue between characters. Use your own experience or imagination. Your speech purpose is to entertain.

As you develop the story, keep these points in mind:

Describe the setting (time, place, circumstances) quickly and concisely, omitting unnecessary details

Make clear the nature of the conflict or difficulty that had to be overcome

Personalize the story to attract and maintain listeners’ interest

Build realistic images and characters through imagery

Establish a mood of excitement and drama from the beginning

Keep the story moving and building

End with a powerful climax

Speech 1 of 3 in an 8 day period. I was nervous doing a speech that was completely out of my comfort zone. I make people smile, laugh, and occasionally shake their heads – especially at Stone Road Toastmasters. To invoke strong emotion on a serious topic is something new for me. “The End of Water” was completely outside the box of anything I had ever considered. I ended to sheer silence. (Almost) never have I been so flattered than when a guest referred to me as a “Thespian”. I don’t think I have ever been as flattered during a meeting.

Last week, I learned that practicing a speech with the GGS (Guelph Guild of Storytellers) prior to a Toastmasters delivery was a wise choice of precedence. I presented speech #5 in the Storytelling Manual: Bringing History to Life, entitled “The Apple of Discord”. In this case, I had no time to prepare and polish as I stepped in for a last minute speaking role. Taking this into account, it went quite well. However, I am now convinced that impromptu-speaking does not always work well when it comes to Storytelling. Since I will be performing this story on Wednesday, I feel quite confident that all of the quirks and foibles will have been worked out due to my mild plundering on the first delivery.

It was Oscar Wilde who said that “passion for pleasure is the secret of remaining young.” My passion for speaking/performance has been growing exponentially over time. I recently joined a second Toastmasters club (Stone Road TM) to increase my speaking/leadership opportunities. Tonight was my first speech at the new club. What a fantastically brillant experience! I presented speech #3 in the Storytelling Manual: The Moral of the Story, entitled “Dinner is Served”. I have had a few weeks to work on this one; it was first performed at the Guelph Guild of Storytellers October event, and I am going to write a version to e-publish, if you will. Although I most enjoy (and excel) at creative off-the-cuff speaking, I am also recognizing the value in preparation and polish. In my case, it appears that passion for performance is *my* secret to remaining young!
